Analytical modeling of dielectric polymer actuators

چکیده
This report presents a literature review on the modeling of dielectric polymer actuators (DPA). The principle of actuation of these actuators and the underlying physics of dielectrics is exposed in order to introduce all the sources of difficulty responsible for the complex behaviour of DPAs. A variational formulation is proposed to model the behaviour of DPA, based on the variation of the dielectric enthalpy and on the virtual work of the nonconservative part of the electric displacement. A finite element method is developed, based on this formulation. A reverse mapping requirement is raised that limits the type of element that can be used. An example of a possible implementation is presented for the case of a linear tetrahedron. Finally, DPA modeling challenges are summarized and recommendations are made for future work.

An MRI-Compatible Needle Manipulator Concept Based on Elastically Averaged Dielectric Elastomer Actuators for Prostate Cancer Treatment: An Accuracy and MR-compatibility Evaluation in Phantoms
Background. A parallel manipulator concept using bistable polymer actuators has been developed to perform prostate cancer biopsy and deliver therapy within the bore of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. The dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) used in this manipulator concept are promising for MRI-compatible robotics because they do not interfere with the high magnetic fields of MRI wh...
متن کاملOn the Kinematics of Parallel Mechanisms with Bi-stable Polymer Actuators
Binary robotic devices have been proposed to perform complex tasks. These systems do not require feedback and are very easy to control. Their kinematic performance approaches that of continuous devices as their degrees of freedom becomes large. To date, high DOF binary systems have not been demonstrated, largely due to actuator limitations. Recently, significant advances have been made with die...
متن کاملDynamic Pull-in Instability of Nano-Actuators in the Presence of a Dielectric Layer
The natural frequency and pull-in instability of clamped-clamped nano-actuators in the presence of a dielectric layer are analyzed. The influence of the presence of Casimir force, electrostatic force, fringing field effect, axial force, stretching effects and the size effect are taken into account. The governing equation of the dynamic response of the actuator is transformed in a non-dimensiona...

This paper reports on the development of a lightweight hyper-redundant manipulator driven by embedded dielectric polymer actuators. This manipulator uses binary actuation and belongs to a class of digital mechanisms that are able to perform precise discrete motions without the need for sensing and feedback control. The system is built from an assembly of modular parallel stages and has potentia...
